Portal VR Business Digital Marketing Plan 2020-2021

Portal VR is a gaming lounge located in Ballard, Seattle. In the store, there are 10 VR stations with high-speed internet and 70+ games pre-loaded. Customers can rent these stations by the hour. They can visit the store as a group and play multiplayer games together in a virtual reality environment. With its interior design and business approach, it is a place for gathering, for virtual reality experiences, for families, for friends, and for team-building. Customers host birthday parties here and try VR games here. The business was thriving in 2019. The booths were mostly booked every evening on weekdays and all day on weekends. The business was impacted by COVID-19 pandemic since the lockdown in March 2020. Harley made a team and provided a digital marketing consultation service to the owners. The plan covered a wide spectrum of analysis and recommendations, as well as campaign proposals, plans for social media ads, methods for social media optimization, and new web design strategies.

 
 

 
 

A Brand New Website That “Shows” The Experience

Portal VR is a business that sells the “experience”. With the expansion of VR technology, home ownership of VR headsets represents the most immediate competition. However, Portal VR’s biggest advantage is the social and in-person experiences— customers can enjoy by celebrating, playing, sharing drinks, interacting, playing, and communicating as a team.

Portal VR’s current website lacks a visual strategy to present the experience and the brand, especially to people who have never been in the VR world. Increasing awareness of the "fun” should be prioritized. Therefore, a well-designed video background is suggested as the main visual on the homepage. The video includes shots like: customers’ VR actions, laughing, high-fiving, dancing, chatting, celebrating, and some actual in-game recording shots to show the VR environment. Mixing in-game recording is a key strategy here— often time it is not helpful in marketing to only show clips of people wearing VR headsets. VR is about the virtual environment experience, so showing the virtual environment is as important as showing the VR hardware.

US Taiwan Watch is a non-profit organization and media team that seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of US-Taiwan relations from different perspectives. As of March 2021, its Facebook page has 133,470 followers, and its podcast got on the Top 10 Political Podcast in Taiwan in 2020. Harley worked with the team and prepared a sales pack for their podcast advertisement, and made comprehensive general marketing optimization analysis and report for the team.

 
 

2020 Haring Center Online Auction Campaign

Haring Center is the biggest research center and inclusive childcare center for the University of Washington College of Education. The Haring Center’s finance relies heavily on their annual fundraising event- the Haring Center Auction Day. COVID-19 pandemic triggered a state-wide lockdown in March 2020, so the team had to transition the event online for the first time. The effectiveness of online auctions is generally challenging, so collaboratively, Harley helped to design and produce a vertical video narrative series to serve as the spine for the week-long campaign. Harley remotely directed the staff to film themselves with instructions, and put together a storytelling series.
